This autumn the Rijksmuseum will honour one of the founders of Dutch painting: Johan Maelwael (Jean Malouel). Fifty breathtaking medieval treasures will be united in Amsterdam to tell the story of Johan Maelwael.

In the winter of 2017, the Rijksmuseum is organising a retrospective of the versatile 19th century artist Matthijs Maris (1839-1917). Maris, who lived mainly in Paris and London, created what by Dutch standards was an extremely individualistic oeuvre.

Since 1975, the Rijksmuseum has organised the annual exhibition Document Nederland. For 2017, Anoek Steketee has been commissioned to depict the theme ‘Stateless’.
