The accessibility statement applies to the website www.rijksmuseum.nl .
How you should be able to use this website
We want as many people as possible to use the Rijksmuseum website and aim for accessibility according to WCAG 2.2, Level AA guidelines. The website has two main tasks: preparing for your museum visit and purchasing museum tickets on the one hand, and enjoying the online collection and stories on the other.
In what way is the website accessible
In providing our online service, we aim to maximise digital accessibility according to the WCAG 2.2 AA standard so that users with various disabilities - including visual, hearing, motor and cognitive impairments - can use our service without hindrance. We therefore provide users with clear information about the accessibility of our service. This website was tested in March 2025 against the WCAG 2.2 AA standard. This test of a representative sample of pages was conducted by Proper Access, a Dutch digital accessibility research company.
Parts of this website are not yet fully accessible. For example:
Sometimes text on images does not have enough contrast
Sometimes the menu button is not accessible
Sometimes the text on a button does not have enough contrast
Sometimes videos play automatically
Carousel with images cannot be stopped
Keyboard focus is outside the cookie banner
Some images have no descriptive text
Many PDFs are not fully accessible
24 of the 55 success criteria of guidelines WCAG 2.2, Level AA, have been met. For a full list, see this audit (in Dutch) .
What we do to improve accessibility
We are working with our technical and design partners and internal content teams to make pages, functionalities and content more accessible. Key improvements are in progress and will be realised from summer 2025. The Rijksmuseum is developing a fully compliant new ticket street. Further optimisations are planned in 2026.
