Two Chinese figures

anonymous, c. 1748

These porcelain figures were made in Meissen and mounted in Paris on gilt-bronze (ormolu) bases. The design of the bases corresponds with that of the base of the clock with the elephant also on display here. This was a way of creating a cohesive ensemble.

Figuur van beschilderd porselein. Op een vlak vierkant voetstuk staat een figuur bekend als een 'Malabar'. De vrouw draagt een geel bovenkleed met blauwe randen en een bontvoering. Zij draagt een puntige hoed. In haar rechterhand draagt zij een mand met vruchten, in de linkerhand een hengselmand met deksel. Het voetstuk is gemonteerd op een verguld bronzen voetstuk. De figuur is niet gemerkt.
