Khair ad-Din Barbarossa

Agostino Veneziano (mentioned on object), 1535

By order of Sultan Suleiman I, Admiral Khair ad-Din Barbarossa equipped a vast fleet with which he captured Tunis in 1534. Charles V came to the rescue of the ousted Tunisian king with a large army. This conquest was followed with great interest and portraits of the most important leaders soon became available throughout Europe, such as this large engraving of the Ottoman admiral.
