Italian Pine and Cypress

John Robert Cozens, 1789

Well-travelled contemporaries would have recognised the pine and cypress. They grew in the gardens of Villa Negroni near Rome, where Cozens was one of many artists who sketched the grounds. No surprise then to see a colleague at work, sitting by a tree. Here too, the yellowed paper conveys the Mediterranean atmosphere.
