Fir

John Robert Cozens, 1789

On his first journey to Italy, Cozens spent considerable time sketching in Switzerland. This landscape doubtless originated there. Here he uses relatively simple techniques to convey the atmosphere high in the mountains, just below the tree line. An ibex clambers over a rock behind the trees. As in other prints, progressively lighter tones emphasise the sense of receding distance.
