Isabella Toewater and her husband, Tjarko Beukema

One of the few people in Bauduin’s photographs we can identify by name is Isabella Toewater. She was in Japan to teach at a Japanese girls school. Bauduin’s cousin, Jacqueline de Ruiter, also worked there. Considering that Japan was long off-limits to western women, it is notable that two women were invited to teach at the school.
