Group portrait at the home of Thomas Glover

attributed to Antoon Bauduin, 1862 - 1866

When Bauduin arrived on Dejima in 1862, it was no longer Nagasaki’s only western enclave. The Scottish merchant Thomas Glover built a house overlooking the bay on Minamiyamate Hill, where Bauduin took a number of pictures. In this one, he himself is on the far right. Bauduin probably determined the position and orientation and then had someone else operate the camera.
