Portrait of Albert Bauduin

attributed to Antoon Bauduin, 1862 - 1866

Fire is fatal for anything made of paper – or printed on paper, as in the case of these photographs. Had they not been stored in a chest, the whole collection would certainly have been destroyed in the heirs’ house fire. The broad bands of discolouration from charred to unmarred visible on some prints is due to the immense heat build-up in the chest.
