Three farmers

attributed to Antoon Bauduin, c. 1863 - c. 1870

In contrast to the pictures of samurai, this one is less concerned with western stereotypes of the exotic and picturesque. These three men were probably farmers, though we know neither their names nor anything else about them. Within Bauduin’s oeuvre, it is a remarkably ‘ordinary’ scene of ‘ordinary’ people.
