Dessave De Cock and his Officers

Jan Brandes, 1785-11-29

Dessave Cornelis de Cock is seated on the veranda of his office, accompanied by his local staff. Originally a Sinhalese position, the dessave was one of the highestranking VOC officials, second only to the governor. Among his responsibilities was the task of ruling on requests and complaints from the local population, who have gathered to the right of the terrace.

    De Dessave (Europese rechter in dienst van de VOC) houdt zitting op de gaanderij van zijn dienstwoning. Voor hem staan de kapiteins (de vertegenwoordigers of voormannen) van de bevolking van Ceylon. Rechtzoekenden wachten voor de gaanderij. Op de voorgrond ligt een hond te slapen. Met opschrift. Onderdeel uit het schetsboek van Jan Brandes, dl. 1 (1808), p. 15.
