Crew aboard the Medusa

attributed to Antoon Bauduin, 1864

The Dutch Navy ship Medusa came under Japanese fire whilst crossing the Straits of Shimonoseki in 1863. Four sailors died. In this photo we see part of the ship’s crew, with on the left a cannon they seized from the Japanese a year later. Given the impossibility of photographing such momentous events, a group portrait offered a good alternative.
