Armchair

anonymous, c. 1615 - c. 1625

Chairs of this type, with a rectangular upholstered seat and back, were found throughout Europe and virtually everywhere were called ‘Spanish chairs’, after the source of the original model. They were made in all kinds of wood and in various sizes, some soberly decorated, others more lavishly ornamented.

  • Description

    Armstoel van palissanderhout, versierd met ebbenhout. Het meubel is bekleed en rust op poten, die verbonden zijn door ondersporten en brede, platte, uitgezaagde bovensporten met een rolwerkpatroon. De armleggerstutten zijn vaasvormig geleed. De armleggers eindigen in voluten met een visvormig monster en acanthusblad. Op de Ionische kapitelen van de rugstijlen zitten toegewende leeuwen als schildhouders. De sporten en huizen zijn versierd met ebbenhout. De groenfluwelen bekleding is wellicht oorspronkelijk.
