Armchair

The Netherlands, c. 1615–1625, rosewood and ebony, velvet and leather upholstery

Chairs of this type, with a rectangular upholstered seat and back, were found throughout Europe and virtually everywhere were called ‘Spanish chairs’, after the source of the original model. They were made in all kinds of wood and in various sizes, some soberly decorated, others more lavishly ornamented.
