Cabinet of a Militia Company

anonymous, c. 1520 - c. 1530

This cabinet would have held a militia company’s valuables, such as drinking cups and guild chains. The imperial crown and the lily on the front panels pay homage to the sovereign, Emperor Charles V. Richly decorated and well preserved, this Gothic-style cabinet is considered one of the finest pieces of 16th-century furniture in the world.

    Dressoir van eikenhout met een open onderstel. Het front van het kastje is in vier vakken verdeeld. Deze zijn versierd met opengewerkte panelen die traceringen vertonen: een lelie, een vuurslag met gekruiste pijlen en keizerskroon, een vuurslag en een vlam (?) met koningskroon. De middenstijl, die eindigt in een engelenfiguur met wapenschild, scheidt twee laden. De zij- en achterwanden zijn versierd met briefpanelen. De voetklossen zijn versierd met leeuwen. Heeft toebehoord aan een schuttersgilde in Alkmaar.
