Guided Tour Ode to Mothers

moedertaak A Mother Delousing her Child’s Hair, Known as ‘A Mother’s Duty’, Pieter de Hooch, c. 1658 - c. 1660‘Don’t ever do what your mother tells you and everything will work out fine.’ (Annie M.G. Schmidt, famous Dutch writer of children’s books) How would someone have reacted to this sound advice in the 17th century? The mothers in Jan Steen’s pictures seem to think anything goes. Smoking? Fine! A swig of wine? Jolly! Conversely, Pieter de Hooch’s mothers run impeccable households, including well-organized linen-cupboards.

This tour is a merry promenade past the mothers in the Rijksmuseum. From pregnancy and lying-in in the 17th century, unmarried mothers, childless princesses, to the nicest of grandmothers.
