Naturally, Barentsz’s ship and his crew were well armed. They had to be able to repel pirates, European rivals and potentially hostile Asian ships. On Nova Zembla the men used the weapons chiefly to defend themselves from aggressive polar bears.

    Fragment van rapier bestaande uit een ijzeren beugelgevest met een fragment van de kling. Het ijzeren gevest is voorzien van een conisch gefacetteerde knop en drie vuistbeugels. De pareerstang is voorzien van decoratieve krullen en de houten greep vertoont sporen van een oorspronkelijke omwoeling. De onderste beugels van het gevest ontbreken.
