Two lidded butter dishes with saucers

anoniem, c. 1735 - c. 1755

Delft factories produced many small butter dishes, mostly in pairs. They vary in painted decorations, knobs and saucers. This model with vertical lugs was also made in the Meissen porcelain factory. The paintings in overglaze enamel – harbour views, figures and landscapes – are of high quality. The red and gold bars around the base resemble wooden slats or basketwork, as if the dishes are standing in little baskets.
