Anna, frontaal op een bank gezeten, neigt iets naar links naar de kleinere Maria, die naast haar in profiel op een kussen op een vouwstoel zit. Zij houdt in de linkerhand een druiventros op (voor het ontbrekende kind) en heeft op de knieën een opengeslagen boek, waarop Maria haar linkerhand heeft gelegd. Anna, met sluier en kindoek, draagt een gewaad met mouwen en over de schouders een mantel, die aan haar linkerzijde omlaag valt, over de schoot naar rechts is toegeslagen en bij de linkerknie is opgenomen, waardoor een deel van het gewaad en een stompe schoenpunt vrijkomen; Maria een gewaad met mouwen en vierkante halsuitsnijding; waaronder het hemd zichtbaar is, voorts een wijde mantel, die over de armen heen tot op de grond hangt en waarvan de bovenrand is teruggevallen. Op het hoofd een kroon. Het haar verdwijnt onder de mantel. De stijlen van de vouwstoel eindigen in een bladmotief, de bank heeft briefpanelen.

Technical notes

Carved and polychromed. The reverse is hollowed out.

Condition

The Christ Child in Mary’s lap, Anne’s right hand and two fingers of the left hand, Mary’s right hand and the parts projecting from her crown are missing. It was later overpainted.

Entry

St Anne sits frontally on a bench decorated with linen fold relief panels. Mary is seen from the side, seated on a foldable chair. She looks intently at the book in her mother’s lap, on which she has laid her hand. Anne’s relatively large proportions are a way of showing the difference in age and seniority between this mother and her humble daughter. In its present state, the sculpture could be interpreted as an Education of the Virgin, whereby Anne teaches her daughter to read. However, the grapes in Anne’s hand, combined with the wide chisel marks on Mary’s lap, indicate that they must originally have been accompanied by the Christ Child. He would have been standing in his mother’s lap in an attempt to reach the grapes held up by his grandmother, a reference to the wine used in the celebration of the Eucharist.

On the basis of its style, which recalls the work of the Maastricht woodcarver Jan van Steffeswert (c. 1470-after 1525), this rather stiff statue can be situated in the Meuse area. An apt comparison can be made with an equally static Virgin and Child with St Anne of around 1500-20 in the Sint-Willibrorduskerk in the Belgian Limburg town of Heusden.1C. In this group, Mary is also seated sideways and wears the same kind of crown (fig. a).
