Sol (the Sun)

Johan Gregor van der Schardt, c. 1570 - c. 1581

The sun is portrayed in the guise of a young man with an idealized muscular body, and a mask encircled by rays of light before his face. He is accompanied by a lion, the astrological symbol of the sun. This statuette may have been part of a spectacular table fountain, although it is questionable whether this lavish ornament was ever completed.

  • Description

    Sol houdt met zijn linkerhand een op zijn hoofd rustende holle pijp vast. Met zijn rechterhand, die op zijn heup rust, houdt hij een staf. Hij staat op een breed, aan de achterkant verhoogd, voetstuk. Op dit verhoogde deel staat de leeuw. Uit de bek van de leeuw spoot eens water, dat vanuit het voetstuk door de linkervoorpoot naar de bek werd geleid. Waarschijnlijk loopt er ook een kanaal door het rechterbeen van Sol naar de buis op zijn hoofd. Deze lijkt in het voetstuk gedicht te zijn.
