Poke bonnet

anonymous, c. 1815 - c. 1820

This bonnet has a complex construction: the upper part of the crown consists of thin slats of wood over a support of woven cane. The rest of the crown is formed by a paper barrel. The brim is also made of paper, which is reinforced along the edge with metal wire.

    Luifelhoed van zwarte zijde. De bol en rand zijn bekleed met zwarte zijde. De bol is versierd met een in stolpplooien geperste strook zijde waar een zijden strik op zit, en met een strook zwarte tule met moesjes. De luifel is afgezet met een band van fluweel en een geplooide strook zijde.
