Netsuke

anonymous, c. 1800 - c. 1900

Three Carved Toggles (Netsuke). Netsuke, or toggles, were used to fasten personal items to the obi, or sash, of a man’s kimono. Often they are inventively decorated and take on the most diverse shapes, by means of which the wearer could display his own taste. With these three mask netsuke, the owner was obviously showing his love for No.
