To determine the ship’s position and chart its course, the captain had an entire arsenal of instruments at his disposal. Among the items found on Nova Zembla are an astrolabium catholicum (universal astrolabe), a fragment of a copper sounding line, a cross staff, a sextant and a chart compass.

    Meetinstrument in de vorm van een kwart van een cirkel, opengewerkt, met een lang en een kort loodrecht op elkaar staand been. De benen van het instrument zijn met elkaar vebonden middels een klein segment en een brede boog. Aan weerszijden is een van elkaar verschillende graadverdeling aangebracht.
