Model of an Optical Telegraph

Optische telegraaf van Antoine Lipkens, van 1831 tot 1839 in gebruik tussen Den Haag, Rotterdam, Breda, Dongen, Helvoirt en 's-Hertogenbosch. De lijn werd in 1832 uitgebreid naar Bergen op Zoom, Bath, Ossendrecht, Waarde, Kruiningen, Heinkenszand, Arnemuiden, Vlissingen, Koudekerke en Domburg. Door de tenen schijven volgens een bepaald patroon in horizontale of verticale stand te draaien konden 63 seinen worden gegeven. De telegraaf was gemakkelijk in een kerktoren aan te brengen. Dit model is waarschijnlijk voor demonstraties of oefeningen gebruikt.

    Model van een optische telegraaf, op vierkante grondplank. Op een voetstuk is een mast gezet, die aan de hoeken van de grondplank is verstaagd. De mast heeft drie ra's, naar boven toe steeds korter, met ronde gevlochten schijven aan de uiteinden. Deze kunnen in horizontale en in verticale stand gezet worden met hendels aan het voetstuk. Aan de top van de mast een vlaggestok met Nederlandse driekleur.

Explanatory note

  • Met Lipkens telegraaf konden 63 seinen worden gegeven. Hij was goedkoop, effectief, en gemakkelijk op hoge gebouwen aan te brengen. Van 1831 tot 1839 werden deze telegrafen gebruikt tussen Den Haag, Breda en 's Hertogenbosch, in 1832 uitgebreid met een lijn van Breda naar Vlissingen, die bij Bath splitste naar fort Lillo bij Antwerpen.

Model of an optical telegraph, mounted on a square base.

A mast is raised on a pedestal, with shrouds running to the corners of the base. The mast has three brass yards with round screens made of plaited reed at the ends. These can be set in either a horizontal or a vertical position by means of handles at the base. At the top of the mast, is a flagpole with the Dutch tricolour.

The telegraph designed by Anton Lipkens (1782-1847) could transmit 63 signals. It was cheap, effective and easily positioned on any tall building. A line of Lipkens’ telegraphs was used from 1831 to 1839, enabling communication between the towns of The Hague, Breda and Den Bosch, and was extended in 1832 by a line from Breda to the port of Flushing, which split at Bath to Fort Lillo near Antwerp. Lipkens’ telegraph was inspired by the 1795 design by Lord George Murray.
