Model of a koff

The Department of the Navy not only had scale models made as part of the design process of new ships, it also collected models of existing ship types. This model was bought together with five others at an auction in 1865. The koff was a small cargo vessel that plied the coastal waters of Europe.

  • Description

    Getuigd en gepolychromeerd blokmodel van een tweemast kof. Het model heeft één hoofddek met luiken, en achter een verzonken kajuit met daarop een campanjedek. Platte boeg met gebogen voorsteven, rond achterschip met twee poorten. Lang recht roer met roerkop in de vorm van een mensenhoofd met hoed, helmstok over het campanjedek. Het model is uitgerust met een anker, een braadspil, drie tonnen, een pomp en een zeereling midscheeps. De zeeg komt voor en achte omhoog, een breed barkhout is aangegeven. Gepiekt rondspant, het onderwaterschip is donkerblauw geverfd met een brede witte waterlijn. Het model heeft een anderhalfmasttuig met zeilen, met vierkant topzeil, fok en kluiver; grootzeil en bezaan zijn gaffelzeilen.

Entry

Polychromed rigged block model of a two-masted ‘koff’.

The model has a single deck with hatches, and a low cabin aft with a poop above it. The bow is flat with a curved stem, the round stern has two portholes. At the stern a straight rudder, a rudder head decorated with a human head with a hat, and a tiller running up to the poop are indicated. The model is fitted with an anchor, a windlass, three casks, a pump and a railing amidships. The sheer rises towards both ends, the model has one wale. The hull is S-bottomed, the underwater body is painted dark blue with a very broad white boot topping. The model has a one-and-a-half rig with sails, including a square topsail, foresail and jib. The mainsail and mizzen are gaff sails.

The model was bought by the Department of the Navy at auction in The Hague (Louis Meijer) on 24 April 1865.2No. 210.
