Model of a Javanese Marketplace

Models like this one were intended as souvenirs for Europeans. They reflect a clear-cut, idealized view of colonial society that bore little relation to reality. The 154 figurines made of bread dough represent different population groupsgroups. Dancers, a gamelan orchestra and a dignitary and his entourage all mingling in the marketplace. The latter looks much like the painted court officials on view elsewhere in this gallery.

Description
Model van een Javaanse marktstal, in de originele behuizing. De scène speelt zich af rondom twee langgerekte marktgebouwen, opgetrokken uit pilaren (pendopo's, typerend voor de Javaanse architectuur, echter deze zijn voorzien van Hollandse pannendaken). Aan de achterzijde van de twee gebouwen bevindt zich het gebouw van de Chinese marktmeester. In en rondom de pendopo's bevinden zich 153 figuren: Chinezen, Malabaren, Javanen, en andere bewoners uit de archipel. Er zijn talloze venters, op de grond gezeten verkoopsters, muzikanten van gamelanorkestjes, en individuele figuren die de markt bezoeken. Aan de linkerzijde een optocht van Javaanse hoffunctionarissen, waaronder een regent (bupati), wedono en mantri, dansers gaan hen vooraf. Aan de rechterzijde zien we een Hollands echtpaar.
