Target guns often remained in use for generations. Their wooden parts were particularly prone to damage and were sometimes repeatedly renewed. This is certainly the case with this gun. The barrel, which may have begun life as part of a Turkish musket, was later mounted on a new wooden stock, together with the other metal mounts. The figure in the cartouche is St Christopher.
