Mogelijke toeschrijving aan Judith Leyster gebaseerd op de catalogus ‘Judith Leyster : a woman painter in Holland’s Golden Age’, 1989, pp. 66-67 (zie documentatie). Daarin staat dat Clifford Ackley heeft gesuggereerd dat deze prent door Leyster gemaakt zou kunnen zijn en dat ‘its light strokes, small scale, and subject (reminiscent of the Jolly Toper, Cat. 5, in his feathered beret and upraised arm) suggest Leyster’s authorship and initiation in this medium’. Daaraan kan toegevoegd worden dat ook de manier waarop de mond en specifiek de mondhoek is weergegeven, doet denken aan Leysters geschilderde werk (vergelijk met bijvoorbeeld ‘A Boy and a Girl with a Cat and an Eel’ in The National Gallery te Londen en haar zelfportret in National Gallery of Art te Washington – https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/judith-leyster-a-boy-and-a-girl-with-a-cat-and-an-eel en https://www.nga.gov/artworks/37003-self-portrait). Door het ontbreken van een signatuur, vergelijkingsmateriaal – andere (gesigneerde) prenten van haar hand – en/of bronnen die kunnen bevestigen dat ze etsen heeft gemaakt, is een zekere toeschrijving vooralsnog niet mogelijk. Eerdere toeschrijving aan Jan Lievens gebaseerd op Hollstein (zie documentatie) is verworpen. - Possible attribution to Judith Leyster based on the catalogue ‘Judith Leyster : a woman painter in Holland’s Golden Age’, 1989, pp. 66-67 (see documentation). It states that Clifford Ackley suggested that this print might have been made by Leyster and that ‘its light strokes, small scale, and subject (reminiscent of the Jolly Toper, Cat. 5, in his feathered beret and upraised arm) suggest Leyster’s authorship and initiation in this medium’. Additionally, the way the mouth – and specifically the corner of the mouth – is depicted recalls Leyster’s painted work (compare, for example, with ‘A Boy and a Girl with a Cat and an Eel’ in The National Gallery, Londen and her self-portrait in National Gallery of Art, Washington – https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/judith-leyster-a-boy-and-a-girl-with-a-cat-and-an-eel and https://www.nga.gov/artworks/37003-self-portrait). In the absence of a signature, comparative material – other (signed) prints by her hand – and/or documentary evidence confirming that she made etchings, a definitive attribution cannot be made at this time. An earlier attribution to Jan Lievens, based on Hollstein (see documentation), has been rejected.
