Two Children with a Cat

Judith Leyster (signed by artist), c. 1630

What fun! The boy in colourful attire abruptly snatches a treat from under the cat’s nose. At the same time, he keeps the animal away from the grabbing hands of the other child. The cat seems afraid of the little boy and might lash out unexpectedly. And then, it would become a mix of laughter and tears. Judith Leyster’s loose painting style contributes to the vivacity.
