Mogelijke toeschrijving aan Judith Leyster gebaseerd op de catalogus ‘Judith Leyster : a woman painter in Holland’s Golden Age’, 1989, pp. 66-67 (zie documentatie). Daarin staat dat Clifford Ackley heeft gesuggereerd dat deze prent door Leyster gemaakt zou kunnen zijn en dat ‘its light strokes, small scale, and subject (reminiscent of the Jolly Toper, Cat. 5, in his feathered beret and upraised arm) suggest Leyster’s authorship and initiation in this medium’. Daaraan kan toegevoegd worden dat ook de manier waarop de mond en specifiek de mondhoek is weergegeven, doet denken aan Leysters geschilderde werk (vergelijk met bijvoorbeeld ‘A Boy and a Girl with a Cat and an Eel’ in The National Gallery te Londen en haar zelfportret in National Gallery of Art te Washington – https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/judith-leyster-a-boy-and-a-girl-with-a-cat-and-an-eel en https://www.nga.gov/artworks/37003-self-portrait). Door het ontbreken van een signatuur, vergelijkingsmateriaal – andere (gesigneerde) prenten van haar hand – en/of bronnen die kunnen bevestigen dat ze etsen heeft gemaakt, is een zekere toeschrijving vooralsnog niet mogelijk. An earlier attribution to Jan Lievens, based on Hollstein (see documentation), has been rejected.
