Kapitein: Hollander die naar het Oosten is gekomen

Head of the Dutch post at Deshima. Nagasaki woodcut, c. 1700. The presence of Westerners at Nagasaki aroused the curiosity of Japanese artists. This portrait of the 'opperhoofd' of Deshima is one of the earliest Japanese depictions of a Dutchman. The Japanese inscription states that this is a 'Portrait of a Hollander who has come to the East'.

    Nagasakiprent. Man ten voeten uit (Hollander) met hoed op halflang haar. In zijn rechterhand houdt hij een bloesemtak, in de linker een zakdoek. Links en rechts van hem opschrift in Japanse tekens en twee grote bloemtakken. Jas en bloemen oranje-bruin ingekleurd; haar en kousen beige-bruin ingekleurd. Opschrift; l.: 'Kapitan'. r.: 'Orand-jin azuma iri no zu' (in Japanse tekens). Nagasaki-e.
