Temperance and Justice. Ivory. Southern Germany, c. 1600-1650. The figure of Temperance was taken from an engraving by Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617). Justice is based on her: although reversed, the contour is virtually identical. Probably the figures were originally applied to a cabinet. Justice: gift of J. Holstein, 1994.

    Vlak reliëf met naakte vrouw, staand achter een gebroken zuil; haar linker hand rustend op de zuil met een opgeheven zwaard, de rechter arm opgeheven tot naast het afgewende hoofd en dragende een weegschaal. De achterzijde van het reliëf is vlak met een afschuining an de voet. In het lichaam zitten twee gaten van een oude bevestiging aan de achterzijde.
