Kleurtekening van een mannetjeskwartel, zijaanzicht op ware grootte. Met opschrift ondermeer over de manier van fluiten van de kwartel. Onderdeel uit het schetsboek van Jan Brandes, dl. 1 (1808), p. 141.

• inscription: ‘OostIndische quartels mannetje. Het wyfje is geheel grys zo als het mannetje op de rug uitziet. waare groote, geteekend den 3 Jan. 1785. Tetrao sinensis.’
• inscription: ‘hy fluit op tweederly wyze 1,2,3, 4 5 ... ook anders ... aslof hij fluite pipiko’
