Jan Asselijn (‘Krabbetje’)

With his left arm akimbo and a self-assured gaze, the painter Jan Asselijn poses before one of his canvasses. He specialized in Italianate landscapes and city views, and with the books on the table at the left he is telling us that he was also well-read. This portrait is one of the first etchings that Rembrandt printed on costly Japanese paper.
