Entry
Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a two-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.
The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Above the wale the side is planked and painted black. Nine shadowed gun ports are painted on the side indicating one continuous gun deck, highlighted by a horizontal, cream-coloured band. The sheer rises slightly to both ends. One wale and one sheer rail are indicated. The bow features an empty beakhead, with two white cheeks, and a black knighthead. The stern has a round tuck, a hollow counter and a taffrail. Below the stern a square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is sharply S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of two masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.
Although Obreen mentions only one model in his catalogue,1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 372. two were found (see model NG-MC-372-1). Both models are remarkably different, the most notable difference being the variant number of masts: two and three respectively. The 18-gun brig Koerier was built by Cornelis Soetermeer (1782-1842) in Flushing from 1835 to 1840 and broken up in 1858.2A.J.
