Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard with a stand.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Above the wale the side is planked and painted black. Nine gun ports are painted in red and green on the side of the ship, indicating one continuous deck, highlighted by a horizontal yellow band. At the forecastle and stern two raised bulwarks with square hances are indicated. The sheer rises slightly to both ends. One wale and one sheer rail are indicated. The bow features a detailed beakhead that ends in a gold-painted decorative scroll; the cathead has a lion’s head, also painted gold. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The taffrail bears the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Below the stern a round-headed rudder of the Soetermeer-type is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

Although Obreen mentions only one model in his catalogue,1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 372. two were found (see model NG-MC-372-2). Both models are remarkably different. A brig usually only has two masts, whereas this model has three. The 18-gun brig Koerier was built by Cornelis Soetermeer (1782-1842) in Flushing from 1835 to 1840 and broken up in 1858.2A.J.
