Explanatory note

Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a single-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The sheer rises towards both ends. One wale and a sheer rail are indicated, both are painted black. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of one mast is shown in a truncated form.

The model carries an incorrect inventory label marked ‘982’, while the model labelled number 402 is in fact number 982:1See NG-MC-982. it is clear that the models must have been switched. Number 402 is a model of a schooner gunboat built in Amsterdam in 1792.2J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 402; J.M. Obreen et al., handwritten inventory list for items 944 to 1431, 1884, manuscript in HNA 476 RMA, inv. no. 1089, no. 982. Markedly however, the model only indicates one mast, whereas at least two are be expected on a schooner.

Scale unknown.
