Guéridon and Lidded Jar

This stand (guéridon) for a candlestick, vase or bowl graced the home of wealthy Dutchmen in Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia) in the 18th century. A special feature of the Japanese lidded jar is that the depiction is not only painted, but also executed in relief. Behind the painted lattices we see people drinking sake and admiring the overhanging cherry blossoms.

    Gueridon van teakhout, staande op drie S-vormig gebogen, in klauwen eindigende poten versierd met bladwerk. De meervoudig gelede en geprofileerde stam is opgebouwd uit balustervormen, waarvan sommige gefacetteerd zijn, en een geribde knop. Het ronde blad heeft een geprofileerde rand en een getrapte onderzijde.
