Green Glazed Censer on feet

anonymous, c. 1650

The green colour derives from copper and lead oxides. This colour was used in Jingdezhen from around 1550, but was initially dark and ran unevenly over the surface. In the 18th century a uniform fresh, apple green colour was achieved. It was made opaque through the addition of tin oxide.
