Gold medal of honour

anonymous, 1762

The medal was given by Jan Schreuder, Governor of Ceylon, to Joan Aalwis, the highest-ranking Ceylonese employed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and the governor’s close adviser on Ceylon. He continued to promote the VOC’s interests during the war between the Dutch and the Kingdom of Kandy. The company thanks him for his loyalty ‘particularly during the recent disturbances’.

Gouden penning met draagoog en rand met 32 saffieren. Op voorzijde een opschrift en op de keerzijde een VOC-schip. Penning is vervaardigd in opdracht van Jan Schreuder, gouverneur van Ceylon, voor de Maha Mudaliyar; Joan Aalwis Widjeje Warddene Senewiratne.

inscription: ‘Om dat / Joan Aalwis Wid- / jeje Warddene sene- / wiratne Maha Modliaar / zig altoos in zijnen dienst in bijzon- / ders, geduurende de laatsten onlusten, / boven veel zijner landsgenoten getrouw / gedragen heeft, zo is hem dese gedenk Penning / door den Wel Edelen Groot Achtb. Heer / Jan Schreuder / Raad extraordinair van Nederlands / India, mitsgaders Gouverneur en Directeur van 't Eyland Ceijlon / met dies onderhoorigheden / vereerd bij deszelfs depart van Colombo na Batavia / op den 17 Maart / 1762’
