Goblet with David and Jonathan inscribed: ‘VRINTSCHAP’ (FRIENDSHIP)

The Bible story of David and Jonathan was widely used for engravings on friendship glasses. But unlike on most others, here the feet of the two men touch. Is this a code that was legible only to insiders? If so, a familiar story is here used to refer to a kind of intimacy that was forbidden in this period.
