Goddess Mazu protecting a Chinese ambassador. Anonymous. China, c. 1800. Gouache on paper. Numerous miracles attributed to the Chinese goddess of sea travel, Mazu, are described and portrayed. Here the goddess ? top centre, in a redgown ? protects the entourage travelling with Lu Yundi on his way to Korea. This episode took place in 1122. During the voyagea terrible storm suddenly engulfed the fleet. Sevenof the eight vessels had already sunk when the goddess Mazu appeared above the mast of Lu Yundi's ship. Instantly, the storm abated. Lu Yundi's face can be seen between the frightened sailors on board the ship. The ambassador is on his knees in prayer. Given by Mr and Mrs Dissevelt-van Vleuten.
