Folding fan
France?, c. 1800–1810, silk, copper, gold leaf, paper, gold paint, wood, lacquer, ivory
Following Napoleon Bonaparte’s appointment as the ‘First Consul’ of France on 10 November 1799, fashion, under his influence, was increasingly dominated by Classical antiquity. This fan is a good example, with its gilt copper punched decorations of sheaves of arrows and stacked foliate and floral ornaments.
