Diaphanorama of a naval battle

Diaphanoramas are particularly suited to scenes with a lot of spatial depth, such as landscapes and naval battles. Interiors were also popular subjects. This naval battle consists of three glass plates painted on both sides, which the maker has effectively used to evoke a strong sense of recession.

    Twee zeilschepen varen op elkaar af. Het schip rechts voert blauwe vlaggen met drie halve manen en een hekvlag met twee gekruiste sabels op een rood pand (Noord-Afrikaanse kapers). Rondom twee sloepen in het water. Op de voorgrond een gezonken schip met daarbij een sloep, eveneens met rode vlag met twee gekruiste sabels. Slechts het onderste gedeelte van de plaat is beschilderd, daarboven onbeschilderd glas. Op een sticker staat: '6 stuks schilderijen op glas.' Onderdeel van een serie platen die samen een diafanorama vormt van een zeeslag.
