Cover Design for Dual in San Sebastian

Dick Bruna, 1961

Bruna regularly chose typography with handmade letters that filled the picture plane. The punctuation marks dictate both the content and the design. Willem Sandberg also frequently applied this principle, for instance in the catalogue Acquisitions 1945-54 for the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The black, comma-like forms represent the horns of a bull.
