Collector’s Cabinet

Cabinets made of various tropical woods were produced in the Northern Netherlands in the second half of the 17th century. This one is a collector’s cabinet designed to hold and organize precious objects. The eighteen drawers on the inside could for instance be used to hold jewelry, portrait miniatures or coins. The carved foliage decoration on the doors also features on larger cupboards of this period.

    Tafelkast, belijmd met palissander- en ebbenhout op een eikenhouten kern. De stijlen zijn versierd met festoenen. De beide deuren hebben ojiefvormig geprofileerde kussens. Op de ruggen is een schelpnis met in de zwikken bazuinblazende engelen en in het midden een festoen aangebracht. Op de kroonlijst in het midden een cartouche en op de hoeken een cartouche met engelenfiguren. Het onderstel heeft twee laden en poten in de vorm van Toscaanse zuilen. Onder de poten gedraaide bollen.
