Camel and Dromedary

The Dutch brought two camels to Japan in 1821, a male and a female. The animals were exhibited in many places in Japan and caused quite a stir. Prints like these served as mementos and provide some information about the creatures, such as their weight and dimensions.

    Een Hollander en twee bedienden met een kameel en een dromedaris; volgens de tekst werden de dieren in 1821 ter gelegenheid van de hofreis aan de shogun in Edo aangeboden. De tekst vermeldt verder een aantal wetenswaardigheden over de dieren en hoe ze Japan werden ingevoerd. (Nagasaki-e)
