Betel holder
anonymous, 1700 - 1725
Betel was a widespread stimulant chewed in Asia, one also used by Europeans. Offering a betel chewing quid to others was an integral part of social occasions. Magnificent boxes and silver receptacles were made in which to preserve the ingredients – including betel leaves – for rolling a quid.
