A Young and an Old Centaur

anonymous, c. 1750 - c. 1780

These two centaurs –mythological creatures that are half-man and half-horse –are reduced copies of antique bronze statues that were excavated in Rome in 1736. The originals are in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.

    De centaur in draf met opgeheven rechtervoorbeen heeft de rechterhand triomferend omhoog en knipt met de vingers. Hij houdt in de linkerhand een gebogen knuppel, die over zijn schouder ligt, waarvan tevens de huid van een everzwijn naar achteren afhangt tot over de linkeronderarm. De lachende kop met krullend haar, horentjes en spitse oren is in de richting van de linkerschouder gewend; de staart slaat naar rechts uit. In de holte van de rug een pluk haar; op de flanken beharing; aan de hoeven ijzers. Met bijbehorend geprofileerd ovaal voetstuk.
