On two evenings this autumn, the museum will open its doors exclusively for Friends to enjoy the Gallery of Honour and its more than 30 17th-century galleries.

A defining feature of the 17th-century art world was the high degree of specialization among painters. Though there were some creative all-rounders like Rembrandt, most painters dedicated themselves to just one genre: historical and Biblical episodes, portraits, domestic scenes, interiors, landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes or still lifes. Almost every subject experienced its own peak in popularity.
